This story is about a frenchman by the name of Cartier, who is a sergeant in the French army posted on the frontier at Fort Mishi-ghan, on the great lakes. He is officially acting as guide for a group of Frenchmen who are looking for a waterway to the Gulf of Cortez. We have met Cartier in a ptevious book, along with Lt. DuPres, searching for a southwest passage to the Pacific Ocean. (River of Swans) Cartier leaves the party he is leading, and sets off to find Lt. DuPres, and the Elk-Dog band of the "people" who he left five years ago to return to Fort Mishi-ghan. His way is full of obstacles, being on foot, and without provisions or items of value to trade for his necessities. He finds an escaped prisioner, who is of the people, and her daughter, also trying to return to the same destination, with the same problem as Cartier; no horse, no food, and nothing of value to trade. Add to that the fact that warriors are looking for the woman and girl. This is their story.
