The "Medicine Knife" continues the story of Pale Star and her husband Lt Du Pres, now called "Sky Eyes" by the People because of his blue eyes. In a buffalo hunt Sky Eyes breaks his flint lance tip. He notices that one warrior from the Head Slitters tribe has a "Medicine Knife". That is what the People call a metal knife. He finds out that some go to a village in New Mexico called "Sennafay" and trade pelts and other things for the metal knives. It is decided that Sky Eyes will lead a party to this far off place and trade for metal items. When he meets up with the Spanish from "Sennefay", the Spanish are afraid he is a French spy and put him in jail. This is the story how his wife Pale Star obtains his release, their successful trading, and their adventure home.
