Le vent de contestation qui souffle dans ces pages a contribu� � faire de ce court trait� l'un des textes fondateurs de la modernit� politique. Rousseau y croise le fer avec les philosophes de l'Antiquit� et de la Renaissance comme avec ceux de son temps; il s'arr�te longuement sur l'histoire de Rome et d'Ath�nes, cite les cas de Venise et de bien d'autres grandes puissances; mais ce faisant, il puise aussi dans son v�cu personnel des arguments qui pr�tent � sa d�monstration une grande force de conviction. � lire ou relire le Contrat social, on prend en effet conscience que le rayonnement de cette oeuvre universelle n'est pas �tranger � un certain cachet local, et que cet ouvrage majeur n'aurait peut-�tre pas �t� tout � fait ce qu'il est si son auteur ne se f�t consid�r�, avant toute chose, comme un citoyen de Gen�ve: N� citoyen d'un �tat libre, et membre du souverain, quelque faible influence que puisse avoir ma voix dans les affaires publiques, le droit d'y voter suffit pour m'imposer le droit de m'en instruire. Heureux, toutes les fois que je m�dite sur les gouvernements, de trouver toujours dans mes recherches de nouvelles raisons d'aimer celui de mon pays!
