Passant en revue les codes de la lecture, les phases de son d�roulement et les diverses modalisations dont le sens peut faire l'objet, il montre que tout lecteur se meut dans un jeu de reconnaissance et d'ignorance, de participation et de distanciation � l'�gard des st�r�otypes du texte, et il sugg�re que l'exploitation maximale de ces tensions pourrait constituer la forme la plus aboutie de la r�ception litt�raire. La partie majeure de l'�tude, qui concerne les modes d'�nonciation et les effets de lecture auxquels les st�r�otypes se pr�tent, montre que c'est toute la logique de l'analyse litt�raire et toute l'historicit� de la litt�rature qui se trouvent renouvel�es par la prise en compte de cette probl�matique. �clairant dans ses synth�ses, pointu dans ses analyses, cet ouvrage ambitieux effectue nombre de mises au point dont nulle th�orie de la lecture et de la litt�rature ne peut faire l'�conomie.
