Nos �ltimos trinta anos, grafites e picha��es invadem as metr�poles brasileiras e se espraiam em muros, viadutos, empenas de pr�dios e �reas abandonadas, como poss�veis manifesta��es art�sticas e pol�ticas que revelam a complexidade da vida urbana. Origin�ria nos sub�rbios de Nova York, a arte urbana dos grafismos se insere em um movimento maior, chamado hip-hop, e tem como ideologia fundante uma cr�tica ao Estado e ao capitalismo, em especial � propriedade privada, como grandes respons�veis pelos problemas s�cio-espaciais existentes. Aqui, analiso como a arte urbana se relaciona com a metr�pole brasileira contempor�nea, em especial S�o Paulo nos �ltimos dez anos. Grafites e picha��es s�o aqui considerados m�quinas de guerra que se movimentam entre fugas e apreens�es pelos aparelhos de captura controlados pelo Estado, pela iniciativa privada, pela m�dia e pelo segmento oficial da arte. Nesse contexto, a cr�tica da arte urbana "ao sistema" � sustentada basicamente pela monotonia da paisagem da cidade, pela preval�ncia da funcionalidade no urbanismo, pela desigualdade social, pela precariedade do espa�o p�blico e por uma busca por prazer e adrenalina.
