Doch nach langem �berlegen und eifrigem Zureden von Seiten seiner zuk�nftigen Frau entschlie�t er sich, ihm doch von seiner bevorstehenden Hochzeit zu erz�hlen. Als Georg mit dem Brief zu seinem Vater geht, kommt es zu einem Disput. W�hrend des Streits erf�hrt der Sohn, dass sein Vater angeblich schon lange mit dem Petersburger Freund in Verbindung stehe und diesen l�ngst �ber alles unterrichtet habe. Der Vater wirft Georg vor, die Leitung des Gesch�ftes an sich gerissen und eine nicht ehrenhafte Verlobte gew�hlt zu haben. Er beendet die Auseinandersetzung mit den Worten: "Ich verurteile dich jetzt zum Tode des Ertrinkens!" Daraufhin l�uft der Sohn aus dem Haus, st�rzt zum Fluss, schwingt sich �ber das Gel�nder, "rief leise: 'Aber liebe Eltern, ich habe euch doch immer geliebt', und lie� sich hinabfallen."
