Soter, die diese vor allem mit dem benachbarten Seleukidenreich um Koilesyrien und die Vormachtstellung im �stlichen Mittelmeerraum f�hrten. Diese Fragestellung ergibt sich vor allem aus der Beobachtung, dass Ptolemaios I Soter, der K�nig �gyptens wurde, sein nach den Tod Alexanders des Gro�en erworbenes Land aus den Zw�ngen der vorigen persischen Besatzung hin zu einer hellenistischen gepr�gten Macht f�hrte und den nachfolgenden ptolem�ischen Herrschern somit den Grundstein f�r die Gro�machtstellung �gyptens im dritten vorchristlichen Jahrhundert legte. Es war �gypten unter K�nig Ptolemaios I. Soter und seinen Nachfolgern, welches nach dem Tod Alexanders des Gro�en 323 v. Chr. in Babylon nicht nur �ber weite Teile das m�chtigste, sondern auch das am l�ngsten bestehende Diadochenreich der hellenistischen Zeit wurde und erst nach der Niederlage in der Seeschlacht bei Actium im Jahre 31 v. Chr. seine Eigenst�ndigkeit verlor und zur r�mischen Provinz wurde. Gleichzeitig wurde die Hauptstadt des Ptolem�erreiches, das von Alexander dem Gro�en selbst gegr�ndete und nach ihm benannte Alexandria, in den ersten drei Jahrhunderten vor Christus zum kulturellen Zentrum des damaligen Mittelmeerraumes und verhalf mit seiner idealen Lage und dem Nebeneinanderbestehen von �gyptischer und griechischer Kultur dem ptolem�ischen �gypten noch einmal zum Glanz alt�gyptischer Zeiten und lie� die letzten Jahrhunderte, in denen �gypten abwechselnd von Fremdherrschern regiert wurde, in der Erinnerung verblassen.
