Helen wrote "As It Was", the story of her courtship and early marriage, shortly after Edward's death, and "World Without End" a few years later. In the original editions and later reprints fictitious names were used for the protagonists. In this edition the actual names are restored.

Read this book after reading the biography of Edward Thomas. Their relationship seemed to have been very difficult, possibly because of his apparent periods of depression when he would live apart from the family and lack of money; a real hand to mouth existence.
Reading this book gave her side of the story - real tolerance and love and resilience. The account of his last home leave is heartbreaking.

Reteeling of Helen Thomas's life with Edward
The original tale is told with Edwards name replacing the 'David' in the original books wher she described life with Edward.
A supplement of letters from Robert Frost and an account of comforting Ivor Gurney by taking to him in the asylum where lived maps of Gloucestershire where he had walked in the past. Tracing the routes gave him much pleasure.
