By the end of the 19th century, Bradford had some two hundred mills and was the centre of Yorkshire's wool trade. With coal, iron and water in abundance, the town prospered and attracted businessmen and tourists. Detailed guide books, such as Black's Guide to Yorkshire, were available to help visitors make the most of their stay. Black's was updated each year and included historical facts about towns and villages, where to stay, what to see and excursions to places of interest. This forty five page booklet combines text relating to Bradford, Saltaire and Bingley from Black's Guide published in 1888, with photographs (including Bradford, Bingley, Saltaire, Shipley and Pudsey) owned by the Keasbury-Gordon Photograph Archive. It is in three parts. The first is fifty photographs mostly taken between 1890 and 1930; the second, a visitor's guide to Bradford and the third, a history and general description of Yorkshire. The text for parts two and three is reproduced from the 1888 guide-book. The map shows the road and railway network in the 1840s. The Black's Guide text and the photographs complement each other and enable us to travel back in time to visit this important British town (now a city) at the height of its manufacturing power.
