Classic Buchan adventure story. Moves at a good pace and shows excellent character development. Old fashioned values predominate. However, turn of the century prejudices are quite evident and may annoy some readers.

One of the Greatest of Suspense Novels
A must read for any adventure-suspense addict. Buchan's charachers are so odd, yet real and compelling, that the reader is drawn to them as people. But it his skillful weaving of the narrative plan that makes this book such a great read. At some point (A particular device of Buchan's) the reader is let into a situation where the most shocking of information is revealed! Buchan actually had the ability to schock the reader, even still today in ourt jaded age. Great writing and storytelling, a classic must read.
