"New York Times "bestselling author Mariah Stewart weaves the enthralling tale of two kindred spirits reunited after years apart. Can they rekindle the passion of their first love? On the fast track at a Philadelphia consulting firm, Abigail McKenna has put her personal life on hold, content to focus on her professional success. But when she's suddenly laid off, Abby finds herself with a dwindling savings account and no promising job prospects. So when a letter arrives holding the solution to all her financial problems, Abby is relieved but saddened: Her dear Aunt Leila has passed away, naming Abby the sole beneficiary of her majestic Victorian estate in North Carolina. But Abby is in for a few surprises. When she travels to claim her inheritance, instead of finding the elegant mansion of her childhood memories, she discovers her aunt's home in shambles, and her aunt's best friend, Belle, who appears to be staying as a permanent guest. Although everything about Primrose may have changed, Abby still has her memories--especially those lazy summer days and warm summer nights spent with Alex Kane--a past love she can't forget. . . .

I love Stewart's suspense novels (Truth Series, etc). I have read several of her side books that are purely romance light stories also. While not a romance novel reader (except period pieces - I love those romances) I glom onto writers. I like one of their books and will read everything they right if I like their prose - regardless of the content not being a thriller. Thus, this book is one I read. Just like I read every book Lisa Jackson and Linda Howard ever wrote, I will do so with Stewart. Just because I liked several of the first books I read from each author that was a best selling suspense book.
This story is a book of coming home, finding roots, finding peace and a longing that was unbidden for years while life took a different turn facing away. A gal who lost much as a young adult - loses more after several years away. A turn of events brings her home to a place forgotten (or more rightly - shoved aside) in the pursuit of security thought obtained outside of the place where roots had taken. Saddled with responsibility and no place else to go - she bids herself to correct her situation while waiting for something to come her way. Not one to be idle, she makes changes to her situation in the one place she has available - her childhood dream spot - now hers due to a bequeath. White elephant that it is - forces her to stay in one place long enough to realize that what she was seeking was really, possibly right where she left it years ago. Coming home settles and unsettles, especially when faced with the same love from years ago who happens to visit often and becomes a part of the changes she must make in order to move on. There are some suspenseful areas of the story as is Stewart's way. The twists (a possible girlfriend for a past love, the coming of a stranger that may be kin, the burglery, the ties to the underground railroad, etc.) all make the novel a fast read. I read in one sitting and enjoyed immensely. You will also.
