Reese Duncan wanted a wife, pure and simple. Someone to have children with, someone to help him rebuild his ranch, someone uncomplicated...and someone very different from his first wife, the woman who'd destroyed his life. But he hadn't bargained on Madelyn Patterson. She was sophisticated and citified, and she was willing to herd cattle, keep house and start a family with Reese. The only thing she asked for in return was love - the one thing Reese refused to guarantee.

I loved this couple. Linda Howard sets up many interesting situations in her stories and true romance prevails. K loved Maddie and she was strong and loving and Reese came to love her for all her great qualities.

I was looking for this story after I read Madelyn's brother's story (Loving Evangeline). This was prior - but I did not know that. I love Howard books, so I got this one -even knowing that it was likely to be merely a love story. I prefer the suspense novels with romance as an aside (if there at all) - but since I enjoy Howard so much it was a no brainer to read this romance book also. Singe read short romance book. Good in that there is a bit of twist on Duncan's side due to his past. His past makes him human and he errs as is expected. He sets out for a "mail order bride" but ends up with so much more. She knows what the stakes are but she loves him immediately and is willing to take what she can get just to be with him. That she loves his lifestyle and his home and they have that quirky game they play in common, it is not a bad start. However, she becomes unwilling to "settle" for mere marriage on order to the specs originally set out. Thus, she changes the game plan. Since he was burned badly once before, he is skeptical and suspicious and cannot free his heart from his mind long enough to see the truth of the situation until it is too late. Read to find out if he recovers his senses enough to get what he wants AND what he deserves. This is a good first read - not really meaty enough to warrant a second look, unless you like a novel for purely romance reasons.

Another good read from Linda Howard
If you like Linda Howard you'll enjoy this book. Be ready for some raw scenes though. I found Duncan a little chauvinistic, but of course he comes around when he's with the right woman.
