Love the Sterns--Just Not This Book
I love the Sterns--really. So I'm disappointed that I found this book rather disappointing. The premise was promising?as were the opening chapters about how the two authors met and worked together early in their careers as food writers (along with the birth of the concept of 'roadfood'); but many of the chapters read as if they?d be more entertaining in briefer forms?and if presented on the radio. So the book became a bit tiresome. Some of the ideas were of the kind I?d expect to find in a Calvin Trillin work (but were not executed as craftily as I imagine he would write them); the writing was a bit 'monotone' in places where it could have been more colorful and effective. But I still love the Sterns--and their shorter pieces for, e.g., *Gourmet* magazine.
