Excellent if you have patience
True readers, who will follow their author through all the books he decides to write, will be more prone to read this book. It is dated, having been written in the 20's, and of course there is that other world of courtship without electronics or sex, but once you commit to read it for plot and author's skill, you will find that the author is excellent at creating characters who never vary from their original personalities. She paints an excellent picture of the mining country of Wales, much like our own Appalacia, a country of great beauty destroyed by coal mining dust and destruction. The protagonist is a self denying, loving man who ends up caring for his whole family while living in the shadow of a favorite, lazy brother. He is the picture of self sacrifice to the end, and the way the people around him react to his principles is worth spending time after you finish the book to reflect on what it brought him in the end. Actually, a good book for youthful readers, as it shows the consequences of actions we all take during life. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it without hesitation to someone who is willing to sit down and digest it.
