The work is based upon the last labourer's revolt in 1830 and takes place within a six hour period over three acts. Captain Swing demonstrates concepts of justice and changing loyalties in the wake of the Napoleonic Wars and service under Wellington. Francis Brett Young was an English novelist, poet, playwright and composer known for his description of the sea, war and medical practices, spanning locations from his home in the West Midlands to further afar in South Africa.
