If the metal is thick, one surface is likely to be much hotter than the other, and the inequality of the expansion causes stresses that tend to bulge or crack the plates. In a very thick plate, while the surface next to the water remains uninjured, the surface exposed to the hot fire is likely to be overheated and burned, and the plate thus becomes rapidly weakened. A thin steel tube, when full of water, may be exposed to the fiercest fire without injury, provided there is not an excessive internal pressure.
