Western Islam by Tariq Ramadan does a good job of explaining the differences in acts and ideas in Islam but also the fact that it is a religion and culture that has lasted for centuries and it has been both spiritual and political in many of the same ways Christianity has been .. It's also a good reference to answer questions that sometimes rise for both Muslims and Christians/atheists. Those curious of the fine points of Islam and how it varies and is similar can fine most answers here. The basic history is a necessity to have in advance to truly understand more of his ideas since it was written not only for curious Westerners like me but western Muslims confused with the difference between the spiritual and the political aspects of Islam
