Tariq Ramadan?s ?In the Footsteps of the Prophet: Lessons form the Life of Muhammad? is a discussion of events in the life of the Messenger of God. Comparisons can be made to other Prophets in the Abrahamic faiths and those of other cultures. Ramadan points out that Muhammad was kind, gentle and patient. He forgave his enemies and laid down rules to be followed by Muslims. The author does not make any mention the current factions within Islam. However, reading this work with general background knowledge of various claims by allegedly religious sects one can see the disparity between ?faith? and action. The book is written in short chapters that concentrate on various events in the Prophet?s life while intermixing history and philosophy to provide a context to Muhammad?s actions and ?sayings?. In his conclusion, Ramadan notes Muhammad had the ?freedom of a being who loves justice and does not allow himself to be entrapped by passions springing from his race, nation, or identity.? It is unfortunate that, as with most religions, a small group have hijacked the name and warped the message by picking and choosing phrases to support their parochial views. If you are interested in some of the differing views within Islam I recommend ?The Great Theft? by Khaled Abou El Fadl and ?Heart of Islam? by Seyyed Hossein Nasr.
