When Alice Munro is having a bad day at the desk she's still head and shoulders above the rest; when she's having a good day--which is most of the time--she occupies her own little snug spot in the cosmos. She seems to occupy a slowed-down universe, one in which she has the time to observe and remember the nuances of human behavior that the rest of us miss , or observe so fleetingly that we don't remember them until she reminds us. This, combined with an honest and unflinching eye, an intellect that has observed and come to its own conclusions, and you find yourself engaged with a writer of singular and creative gifts. I am not a particular fan of short stories, Alice Munro is the exception. I would recommend this book to any serious reader.
