An outstanding piece of rock scholarship. A responsible exploration of the upbringing, personal life, and psyche of the founder of the Rolling Stones, Brian Jones.
Ms. Aftel had to fight hard to get into the Stones' inner circle to do post-mortem research on Jones. Keith Richards helped out a lot, but not Jagger.
Jones was like Syd Barrett with Pink Floyd. Both had the founding visions of their respective groups. Both had fragile psyches that couldn't hold up under the onslaught of drugs. Both faded away psychiatrically, with other members of the groups taking over firm control of the reins (Jagger/Richards with the Stones; Waters with Floyd), changing the groups' respective outputs, but still being influenced by the original visions of their respective founders.
Jones is underrecognized, and Aftel's book helps rectify this. Rock scholars and Stones freaks will very much want to consider getting this book.
