This book would have been just as good if it had been cut by 50%. The author really repeats himself throughout, describing Julia as a kind of never-run-down windup toy. Her contributions were remarkable, beginning with the book she worked on for perhaps 6 years, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, and her first cooking show on the tiny, unfunded Boston PBS station. Nothing slowed her down: Age, non; her husband's Alzheimer's, non; her broken hip, non; their posting to remote locations such as Oslo, non; occasional financial difficulties, non; her father's non support, non; deaths of close relatives and colleagues, non! In fact, I got the impression that it would be impossible for her to slow down. Still, I had not known how many books she had written, how many types of cooking shows she had been a part of, and how many people she had offered support to.
