Does the unspoiled beauty of an area have an effect on the music that its denizens produce? That's the loose premise on which this compilation is based. The tracks here are light, subtle pieces by popular musicians from places such as Costa Rica, Madagascar, New Zealand, and even Big Sur. Most of the tracks have a quiet, evocative quality that, in theory, reflects the natural wonders of each area. Papua New Guinea native George Telek's "Midal" has a gently insistent rhythm and warm harmonies. Hawaii's Keola Beamer provides a slack key guitar number with a sophistication that eschews the oversentimentality that sometimes plagues this style. Indian singer Shweta Jhaveri's "To a Beloved" is one of the highlights of the disc. Her warm voice floats over jazzy violin and percussion for a quietly elegant effect. Less successful is the slightly forced "Mais Filhos de Gandhi by Brazilian singer Ana Rita Simonka. The mix of bossa nova with Indian classical music is a promising concept that comes just short of working. The incomparable Tibetan singer Yungchen Lhamo closes out the disc with the exquisite "Happiness Is..." from her Real World release Coming Home.
