When it comes to New York City club nights, Body & Soul has become the scene's nomad. Bouncing from one venue to another, the event never seems to lose any of its steam, or soul for that matter. Hosts François K., Danny Krivit, and Joe Claussell turn any venue into their sanctuary and perform their weekly soul rituals. Just as nomadic as the event itself are their recorded compilations. Moving into its fourth installment, the Body & Soul series shows no boundaries in educating the public about soulful house music. However, the track listing of Body & Soul NYC, Vol. 4 isn't as diverse as those of its predecessors. Starting off with "Fade," a drippy über-soulful vocal piece by Wave Records' Kimblee, the vocal feel of the album never fades. (No pun intended.) While the diversity of the track listing may suffer, the quality of the tracks does not. Chicago's Glenn Underground lends some of his smooth jazzy flow to the compilation, as well as a contribution by Nathan Haines, who donates his diva ballad, "Earth Is the Place." Just as the Body & Soul club event progresses as a series of highs and lows, the compilation follows a certain blueprint of aesthetic genius.
