Discovery Channel: Animal Planet - Sing with the Animals was one of these. The idea behind this disc was to compile several animal-themed pop-rock, pop and rock & roll songs with children in mind, then add trivia and games to the liner notes, which were written by J.D. Roth, the host of the Animal Planets' show, Zoo Venture. Although the compilation can be a little cutesy, there are a lot of good songs here and its care-free attitude should be appealing to parents and children alike. Among the highlights are Bill Haley's "See You Later, Alligator," Rex Harrison's "Talk to the Animals," the Tokens' "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," the Trashmen's "Surfin' Bird," Mancini's "Pink Panther" and the Monkees' lovely "The Porpoise Song" -- just beware that "Born to Be Wild" is by a group called Chickenwolf, not Steppenwolf. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi
