Sure, there were songs that were very popular on MTV, but they didn't dominate the selections. Starting with Vol. 6, the first volume of the second wave, MTV plays a bigger part than before, with many of the songs being MTV staples -- including Men at Work's "Who Can It Be Now?," Golden Earring's "Twilight Zone," ABC's "The Look of Love," Culture Club's "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me," and, to a lesser extent, Romeo Void's "Never Say Never." This isn't a bad thing at all, but it does signal that new wave started to break through, big time, toward 1982. Fortunately, while the compilers of Just Can't Get Enough acknowledge that shift, they aren't consumed by it, and follow the same path as always, pulling in cult favorites like Jim Carroll's "People Who Died" and X's "White Girl," along with novelties like Josie Cotton's terrific "Johnny, Are You Queer?," the Sparks' Amazing Kreskin tribute, "I Predict," and Captain Sensible's dunderheaded "Wot." Between those two extremes are some truly fine songs -- the Church's dreamy "The Unguarded Moment," Any Trouble's "Second Choice," Talk Talk's "Talk Talk" -- and while that makes for a bit of a scattershot collection, there are enough great moments to make it a fun, satisfying listen. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi
