Beach Rats is a hardcore supergroup that features Brian Baker (Minor Threat, Dag Nasty) and Pete Steinkopf (the Bouncing Souls) on guitars, Bryan Kienlen (also of Bouncing Souls) on bass, Ari Katz (Lifetime) on vocals, and Danny Windas (the Arsons) on drums. With that lineup, you probably have a very good idea of what the first album from the group, 2022's Rat Beat, will sound like, and you're really not wrong. Beach Rats are a hardcore band, with speedy tempos, buzzy swarms of guitar and bass, and barking vocals showing no shortage of attitude, which is to say if you like the bands these guys have been in before, chances are good you'll like this, too. Fortunately, Beach Rats manage to be a bit more than just a product of their résumé. There's a healthy amount of melody and imagination in their songs, occasionally slowing down the frantic 4/4 attack for the sake of variety and dynamics on numbers like "She Was a Goner" and "Clorox Boys," and as befits a band of punk rock lifers, the performances are tight, powerful, and confident throughout. What could easily have come off as five veteran punks goofing around turns out to be a side project that delivers a respectable amount of rock action as they wail through a dozen songs in under 22 minutes. (See? I told you this was hardcore.) There's a hint of nostalgia in this music -- the closing number, "Fuck You Dad," sounds pretty funny coming from five guys currently in the deep end of middle age -- but the sound of these musicians cranking up the amps and having some good sweaty fun doing it overpowers that. You don't have to remember the days of hardcore matinees to like Rat Beat -- if you crave all things fast, loud, and just a bit tuneful, this will be right up your alley. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
