Hot Dogie
Katy Moffatt just keeps rolling in her inimitable groove. A singer's singer (and a rootsy songwriter), with her clear, chesty voice, sensitive, unforced phrasing and understated arrangements, she raises country toward the art song without getting fancy about it, and does it no more wonderfully than in this cowboy collection. She brings to the western plaintive a fado-esque gravity and thrill. Listen to her make of David Halley's "Further" a Texas torch song, or prove, in her a capella rendition of "Texas Rangers", that there's no finer voice in contemporary music.
