This 21-song collection would probably get a slightly higher rating, if only it weren't a bit misleading -- it does, indeed, feature Bobby Goldsboro's biggest hits, but they're all re-recordings, done in Nashville in February of 1999. Now, that isn't necessarily a bad thing, as Goldsboro's voice is still strong throughout this album; indeed, on "Summer (The First Time)" he doesn't sound like he's aged a day from 1973, except that he was 26 years older when he did this rendition and is able to put more feeling into the performance. And the arrangements make an excellent try at emulating the hit versions (mostly from the United Artists Records catalog), so no one is going to be disappointed on that count, either. It's just that one wishes that for the sake of clarity, the packaging indicated these origins on the outside. And as long as Goldsboro (who co-produced) was going to the trouble of making this record, he might as well have annotated it as well -- one would love to know his thoughts on some of these songs, most of which he wrote or co-wrote; and some instrumental credits would've been nice, too (the playing is good throughout). But it has its virtues in the listening, which is where it really counts, and one does get Ray Stevens contributing the harmony vocals on "It's Too Late" and "Little Things." ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi
