Based on Harold Robbins' bestseller, The Adventurers stars Yugoslav heartthrob Bekim Fehmiu as Porfirio Rubirosa clone Dax Xenos. Having suffered mightily as a child in a fictional South American country due to the political activities of his parents, Xenos grows up to become a sleazy, sexually manipulative playboy. He romances middle-aged widow Olivia de Havilland, then dumps her after he's run through her fortune. He then takes up with heiress Candice Bergen, who bears his child. When the kid is killed and Xenos turns his back on her, Bergen finds solace in lesbianism. Okay, I saw this movie in the theater when I was a teenager in 1970. In fact, I saw it twice that way! The beautiful women are still very beautiful! The lead actor Bekim Fehmiu is a good looking young man, but a very bland and uninteresting actor as the adult Dax Xenos. (The boy who played him as a child was great!) I was surprised the "today rating" of the film is a clear "PG" when it was an "R" in my youth, and still has all of the rather bloody violence, and sex and nudity. But it was great to see it again! Great to see Ernest Borgnine, Charles Aznavour and Candice Bergen, all in their prime years, too! Alert: This is a long movie with an intermission break!
