A tragedy brings together two strangers in this independent drama from director Travis Fine. Montine McLeod (Melissa Leo) is a forty-something flight attendant who is increasingly unhappy with her life; her mother is in the latter stages of Alzheimer's Disease, her brother is a minister whose congregation has turned their back on him, and she's been relying on alcohol to deal with the stress of her job and her family. Montine has developed a short temper and is on thin ice with her employers for telling off passengers, and she feels like she's about to explode when she has to look after a ten-year-old boy, Omar Hassan (Anthony Keyvan), who is flying on his own to a boarding school where he's won a scholarship. However, Montine's attitude changes with the space of a few hours; it's September 11, 2001, the flight Montine is working is grounded in Texas, and Omar is shocked when he hears that the World Trade Center was attacked, since his father works there as a janitor. Unable to fly and not sure what else to do, Montine offers to drive Omar to New York City in the hope they can find his dad, and en route two people with almost nothing in common learn a great deal about one another. The Space Between received its world premiere at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival. Mark Deming, Rovi
