Best gay film of 2008?
here tv has hits and misses in the films they produce, This independent movie is a big hit. Shelter is a universal story of finding love in a difficult world.
Zach (Trevor Wright) gives up his dreams of art school to assist his selfish sister Jeanne (Tina Holmes) raise her son Cody. Zach is the stable and loving person in this dysfunctional family from the gritty town of San Pedro.
Zach's best friend and surfing buddy, Gabe, lives in a palatial home overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The home is Zach's refuge and respite from the demands of his sister and his dead end job.
Zach is waxing his surfboard at Gabe's home when Shaun (Brad Rowe), Gabe's older brother, steps onto the deck. We learn that Shaun has come home to recover from a relationship ending and from writers block.
There is a warmth to their meeting that sets the stage for their developing a friendship and relationship. The two (straight) actors create authentic characters who meet, fall in love, have difficulties, and, in the end, affirm their love for each other.
The acting, story, and settings are first rate. The music is well selected and integrated with the story. The music CD has been getting good reviews and sales.
Shelter has been one of my favorite movies of 2008.
