David Jason, Tim Curry, Nigel Planer, and Sean Astin star in writer/director Vadim Jean's imaginative adaptation of The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic -- the first two books in author Terry Pratchett's popular Discworld series of fantasy adventure novels. Naïve tourist Twoflower (Astin) is on holiday in Ankh-Morpork when a terrible fire breaks out, forcing him to flee from the city alongside an incompetent wizard named Rincewind (Jason). Now, as the clueless pair set out on a magical journey across the disc, neither realizes that they are merely pawns in an elaborate board game being played by the gods. After encountering a pair of barbarians on their way out of Morpork, Twoflower and Rincewind take a trip to an inverted mountain housing dragons that only exist in imagination, survive a fall off the edge of the disc during a perilous visit to the country Krull, and attempt to beat Rincewind's former classmate Trymon (Curry) to a collection of eight spells that could save Discworld from total destruction. Nice to see a collection of short stories turned into a movie. Someone actually paid attention to the book. I particularly liked the depiction of Twoflowers - watch carefully - every tourist should be wearing a Tilley hat. While not everything could be included, I fully appreciated what was - and the video was almost as much fun as the book - which is saying a very great deal. David Jason does a super job as Rincewind.

A Wizzard Spelling Contest
TITLE: The Color Of Magic
GENRE: Fantasy
CAST: Sean Astin, David Jason, Tim Curry and the Sentient Luggage
PLOT: The Tourist of Discworld hires a failed wizzard to show him the sights. The Regent is worried about Armies from the Tourist's land and the School of Wizzardry gets many faculty changes thanks to an evil sort. The Turtle the world exists on the back of starts heading to the sun and a spell contained in the guide wizzard's head is the only salvation.
RETURN ON INVESTMENT: 9 of 10; This story would have failed had it not had excellent CGI and artistic modeling performed. The costumes, which do not change throughout the story are excellent in that they help develop and hold the developed characters identities. We meet Cohen, the Barbarian just before he turns 90 but as he wins the heart of a 20 yr old maiden. I cannot think of another fantasy where an inanimate object, the luggage of the tourist, is given such a developed personality, well done.
DVD BONUS: None
ADDED NOTES: As a movie to occupy and entertain the young and lovers of fantasy the effort is worth the watch.
