To Catch a King
There has always been an intense fascination with the Duke and Duchess of Windsor,
whether we approve or disapprove of them. And the intensity of the international interest in the couple is really caught up over their sojourn in Portugal, which is the basis of this mysterious , historically -based-on-truth movie. Robert Wagner is supposed to be a Casablanca Rick, with cafe-nightclub and all..but be that as it lays, his performance is sound as the curious nuetral who gets caught up in the machinations of spies, counter-spies, police and military types, a whole assortment of international scoundrels..
Of course the big question for us has always been whether the Duke and Duchess were dupes, or major players? How much did they want the British throne? How much of the plan was their own? Who is, after all, catching who? What did make Churchill decide to boat them out of Europe. As a fact-based mystery-movie, it's hard to top this one.
