Embittered at having been wrongly imprisoned and determined to seek vengeance against his accusers due to the grim fate that befell his wife and daughter while he was incarcerated, ex-convict Sweeny Todd (Depp) returns to his hometown and opens a modest barber shop. The one thing different about Todd's shop, however, is that no one who walks in for a trim is ever seen again. Subsequently branded "The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" by the frightened community, Todd continues with his murderous exploits with a little assistance from his amorous accomplice, Mrs. Lovett (Bonham Carter) -- whose popular meat pies secretly have a most unsavory ingredient. Depp at his Best!
This is an absolutely excellent production of Sweeney Todd. I have seen the Broadway film version with Angela Lansbury, which received stellar reviews, and I believe this is even better! Everything about all the performances in this movie is professional and above parr. Johnny Depp's performance as Todd is superb, and Helena Bonham Carter is perfect in her role. The sets are wonderful; one really feels that one is in a theater. Altogether, a really excellent, well-done film.

The best movie Johnny Depp has ever done. I didn't like the ending that well, but it does go along with the movie. Can't wait to see his next musical!!!

Disappointed
I just finished watching this movie and I just did not care for it. I love Tim Burton movies but this one fell short to me. I would have liked it better if it had not been a musical. The scenes where he cuts the throats was very fake looking. I got thru the whole thing but I doubt that I will ever want to watch it again.

Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
A young barber is thrown into prison wrongfully, by a judge that wants the man?s young and beautiful wife. After 15 years, Ben Barker, now Sweeny Todd, returns to London for one purpose, and one purpose alone, to take revenge on the judge. He starts up his barber shop again, with a little help from Mrs. Lovette, who owns a meat-pie shop. With times being tough, the two team up as business partners, Sweeny kills anyone who comes in for a shave, and Mrs. Lovette makes them into pies. Yummy!
What I like About It: This movie is just downright, entertaining, plain and simple. Ok, so you need to have a keenness for the macabre, because, hello, its Tim Burton! But, if you like Broadway shows, GO SEE THIS! If you don?t like Broadway shows, GO SEE THIS! From the moment this movie starts, you forget you are watching a film and feel like your sitting in a playhouse. The screen goes dark, and then suddenly, loud and daunting, the music begins and you can almost imagine the curtains going up. I have never seen an audience close their cell phones so quickly before!
This is a film adaptation of the famous play, the songs are timeless, and are very, very well sung by the cast. That's right! The entire cast does their own signing. Only cautionary note, this film is quite violent, and bloody. So if your squeamish it might be uncomfortable. Other than that, it's superbly acted, (which is hard to do while singing), its funny, in a very dry-British way, and as always, with Tim Burton films, visual stunning and daring. Its Three Best Aspects: Directing, Art Directon, Songs. Tim Burton is a genius, and never seems to do a film without it being groundbreaking and unique. Personally, this is his best yet! He knows how to rope in an audience and not let them go! Secondly, the film is visually stunning, very, very dark, but stunning nonetheless. Somehow, all of it feels like it on a stage as well, the sets, the costumes, how the scenes are shot, it is quite incredible. And lastly the songs. The tunes go from fast and quirky, to slow and sweet. You will get lost in them!
My Three Favorite Lines: 1) Sweeney Todd: [holding up his razor] At last! My arm is complete again! 2) Mrs. Lovett: You're barking mad! Killing a man what done ya no harm! Sweeney Todd: He recognized me from the old days. Tried to blackmail me. Mrs. Lovett: Oh, well that's a different matter then. For a moment there I thought you lost your marbles. 3) Sweeney Todd: I can guarantee the closest shave you'll ever know.
