Based on a short story by the late Philip K. Dick, this science fiction-thriller reflects the writer's familiar preoccupation with themes of concealed identity and mind control. Tom Cruise stars as John Anderton, a Washington, D.C. detective in the year 2054. Anderton works for "Precrime," a special unit of the police department that arrests murderers before they have committed the actual crime. Precrime bases its work on the visions of three psychics or "precogs" whose prophecies of future events are never in error. When Anderton discovers that he has been identified as the future killer of a man he's never met, he is forced to become a fugitive from his own colleagues as he tries to uncover the mystery of the victim-to-be's identity. When he kidnaps Agatha (Samantha Morton), one of the precogs, he begins to formulate a theory about a possible frame-up from within his own department. Directed by Steven Spielberg, who hired a team of futurists to devise the film's numerous technologically advanced gadgets, Minority Report co-stars Colin Farrell, Max von Sydow, and Neal McDonough. TITLE: The Minority Report
GENRE: SciFi, Near term, Detective thriller
CAST: Tom Cruise, Max Von Sydow, Colin Farrell, Samantha Morton, Neal McDonough, Steve Harris, Patrick Kilpatrick, Lois Smith and Kathryn Morris
PLOT: A triad of pre-cognitive youths are employed to Predict premeditated crimes. The police chief who runs the small but tight operation is himself implicated as a future killer. He finds that the pre-cognitives do not always agree on the events that are foreshadowed. They do agree that his case has no minority report (the vision of a dissenting visioner) but the lead fortune telling goddess keeps harping about another murder which did have a minority report and as the chief tries to balance his predicament with his desire to serve justice in the case of that minority report, he solves both.
RETURN ON INVESTMENT: 9.5 of 10; Let's go down the list: Acting (TC, MvS, CF et al all professionals; The Director: Steven Spielburg the best there is; The CGI & Effects are from ILM of George Lucas fame, the best; The music score is assembled by John Williams, the only composer and conductor of note in the second half of the 20th century(coupled with a sound engineering Oscar) the best available; The story comes from Philip K Dick (Of Total Recall, Blade Runner and Screamers fame) one of SciFi's superstars; The props and technological visions appear to be what they will be like in fifty years so mission accomplished in the visioning department. The only drawback is the blue tone so many films incorporating CGI seem to use to cover seams and what-not is too evident in this case. They call it artistic (like Picasso's Blue period, I call it distracting from being involved in the world being presented).
DVD BONUS: A second DVD with tons of background story, itself a well done documentary of the processes employed to make movies these days.
ADDED NOTES: I love the cars! They move sideways, up and down all under computer controls. The highways to accomodate them lead right up to your door and deliver you to your living room, not the garage.
