Good Classic for All
This classical ballet is a known family favorite, and justly so! Whether you are age 8 or 80, the Nutcracker has something for everyone. Misha ( Baryishnikov) portrays our hero and Gelsey with wig intact, portrays Marie/Clara. Although fragile Gelsey was too ill to dance the lead in "The Turning Pointe," she is certainly a noteworthy ballerina, and a delight to watch repeatedly in this filmed version of the famous story ballet, "The Nutcracker."
The choreography, while all together good, is seemingly best for the corps in the Snow Scene. One wonders about the "trio" with Minsk, Misha and Gelsey. Every Nutcracker version has its weaker points and the trio, with its all so obvious psycho-drama is a bit much, even for my taste, and a bore by todays' standards. Yet, don't let that deter you from enjoying the ballet.
Little ones will be fascinated and parents glad to see something cultural that holds merit for everyone without subtitles. Enjoyable--yes, definitely a keeper! American Ballet Theatre dancers adeptly portray all other roles. This is a clean, not too scary ballet, with basic photography that doesn't detract from the dancing. Of course, Tchaikovsky's music is likely the best dance music ever composed. If you are a novice, please luxuriate in the simple beauty of Tchaikovsky's melodies and classic tunes. they will become your friends long after you forget the dancing. Music any better is hard to find.
