Classic Western
James Stewart re-invented himself in series of westerns directed by Anthony Mann during the 1950s. Gone was the "aw shucks" characters of previous films.
His roles displayed a man who was driven by the past and who was obsessed and aggressive to "set things right".
Filmed on location in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado the film is a very pared down western with only five characters within the story.
Mann utilises the landscape throughout the story as Stewart's character must dodge rock slides, overcome a bluff while pursuing Ryan's character for a $5,000 reward.
Classic western stuff. The forerunner to the Eastwood / Leone movies and revisionist westerns of the 1960s.
