A classic
Les Girls is a classic mid-50s musical, with Gene Kelly still going strong. I got it to see Kay Kendall's performance, when she was still at her best. Her brilliant career would be cut short by leukemia only a few years later, when she was barely 30. But her comedic timing, her willingness to do anything the script called for, from quick verbal exchanges, to slapstick, and her sheer chameleonic beauty were always a delight. But she was a real actress, not just another 'pretty face' - though she could certainly 'do' that, and carry it off with aplomb - glamour to the hilt. Her first film, 'The Constant Husband', made in 1946 with Rex Harrison, made her an instant star, a status she never relinquished.
