The piano music of Ferruccio Busoni has been through ups and downs in popularity, but he seems to be coming back. Except for the big Bach transcription at the end, the works on this release by pianist Peter Donohoe are not terribly often performed, but they make an immediate impression in Donohoe's performances, which in addition to being brilliant, also evince a certain lively enjoyment of the music. The piano music of Ferruccio Busoni has been through ups and downs in popularity, but he seems to be coming back. Except for the big Bach transcription at the end, the works on this release by pianist Peter Donohoe are not terribly often performed, but they make an immediate impression in Donohoe's performances, which in addition to being brilliant, also evince a certain lively enjoyment of the music. The outer works, the Bach and the opening Bachian Toccata, BV 287, contain most of the keyboard heroics, and from the compelling ringing opening of the Toccata, Donohoe has these totally under control. The most interesting news here are the Elegien in the middle. These are later pieces, and while they certainly contain virtuoso aspects, that's not really what they are about. Instead, Busoni experiments with tonality while avoiding atonal or even highly chromatic harmonies, and he proposes configurations of extended harmony and keyboard figuration that are really unlike anything else of the period....
