�Prescribe el Nuevo Testamento una forma de gobierno eclesi�stico? Los protestantes han respondido com�nmente a esta pregunta en forma negativa; y habiendo respondido as�, han procedido a adoptar las formas de gobierno que mejor se adaptan a los gustos y al juicio de las diversas partes en las que se dividen. Creemos que antes de proceder hasta ahora, deber�an haber considerado la pregunta m�s fundamental, �Autoriza el Nuevo Testamento alg�n gobierno en la Iglesia? Si no lo hace, entonces cada forma de gobierno de la Iglesia es una usurpaci�n. Es totalmente cierto que sin la autoridad divina ning�n ser humano tiene derecho a controlar la conducta religiosa de su pr�jimo, especialmente a separar a su pr�jimo de la pertenencia a la iglesia o de los privilegios correspondientes. Pero no se niega que el Nuevo Testamento autorice el ejercicio del gobierno en la iglesia; s�lo se niega que se prescriba la forma de gobierno. Incluso muchos admiten que cierta forma de gobierno exist�a en la era apost�lica; sin embargo, se niega que esta forma estuviera destinada a ser perpetua. No es el prop�sito de este tratado discutir completamente esta cuesti�n, o exhibir en detalle la forma de gobierno de la iglesia en el Nuevo Testamento; pero el tema que hemos escogido supone la existencia de un anciano en la iglesia, y el desarrollo del mismo implicar� necesariamente la resoluci�n de la cuesti�n m�s fundamental arriba mencionada. Si se comprueba que cualquier gobierno eclesi�stico est� divinamente autorizado, debe aparecer como una circunstancia muy singular si no se indica la forma de ese gobierno. Adem�s, si encontramos una forma de gobierno en existencia en las iglesias apost�licas, exigiremos algo por encima del mero juicio o experiencia humana para justificar un abandono de la misma, o incluso una modificaci�n de la misma. No menos que la misma autoridad que los institutos pueden abolir. Lo que Dios ha instituido s�lo �l puede abolir. Puede abolir con su palabra, o puede abolir providencialmente haciendo finalmente imposible lo que una vez fue instituido, pero a menos que sea abolido todo nombramiento divino debe permanecer para siempre.
