Ce livre n'�tait dans l'origine qu'une simple instruction �l�mentaire � la v�rit� plus compl�te et plus exacte que celle adopt�e pour l'instruction des nouveaux Ma�ons. Traite favorablement par MM. les Journalistes, et accueilli avec beaucoup d'int�r�t par les Ma�ons et parle public, il est devenu, � la deuxi�me �dition, un ouvrage assez �tendu dans lequel l'auteur a introduit des mat�riaux historiques et critiques, notamment. un abr�g� de l'histoire de la Franche-Ma�onnerie, des r�flexions sur l'utilit� de cette institution c�l�bre, et un examen des syst�mes les plus connus sur son origine. La Troisi�me �dition ne doit, autant que possible, rien laisser � d�sirer non seulement aux Ma�ons instruits, mais encore aux profanes dont la curiosit� est si vise; et l'auteur pense avoir rempli ce double objet sans s'�tre �cart� de la marche qui lui �tait trac�e par la prudence. C'est donc avec une confiance � la fois juste et modeste, qu'il pr�sente aujourd'hui un ouvrage � la confection duquel il a apport� tous ses soins, le premier qu'il ait mis au jour, et celui que sou coeur � toujours avou� avec une pr�dilection particuli�re.
