You will laugh and cry!
I ,first, read this book when I was about 12 years old and I have NEVER tired of it. I reread it about every 10 years and I see new things each time. I feel it is one of Ms. Porter's best written books.

Remember the REAL heroes?
This book is a post WWII story of an injured vet whose wounds had become septic and would not heal. The doctors, having given up on being able to help him, chose to send him to a hospital where the entire patient population was infected with tuberculosis. The rational of the doctors was that even though TB was not currently present, it was virtually inevitable. Overhearing this consultation between his doctors, the weak and suffering vet, got up and started walking, leaving behind the hospital, the hopeless, helpless attitude for his condition and began an amazing journey back to life and health, happiness and a meaningful, productive existence overflowing with love, beauty and gratitude. In the process of finding HIS life, he is able to reach out and bring the same healing of spirit to several people who crossed his path. This is a beautiful book for everyone, but especially for those whose hearts still embrace, the values, grace and faith of an earlier time.
