V�tues de satin, �tincelantes d'or et charg�es de pierreries qui brillaient moins que leurs yeux, toutes racontaient des passions �nergiques, mais di- verses comme l'�taient leurs beaut�s. Elles ne diff�raient ni par les mots ni par les id�es; l'air, un regard, quelques gestes ou l'accent servaient � leurs paroles de commentaires liber- tins, lascifs, m�lancoliques ou goguenards. L'une semblait dire: Ma beaut� sait r�chauffer le coeur glac� des vieillards. L'autre: J'aime � rester couch�e sur des coussins, pour penser avec ivresse � ceux qui m'adorent. Une troisi�me, novice de ces f�tes, voulait rougir: Au fond du coeur je sens un remords ! disait-elle. Je suis catholique, et j'ai peur de l'enfer. Mais je vous aime tant, oh ! tant et tant, que je puis vous sacrifier l'�ternit�. La quatri�me, vidant une coupe de vin de Chio, s'�criait: Vive la gaiet� !
