Avec de nombreuses modifications anachroniques, notamment le r�le du couple bourgeois comme un mirage burlesque du couple tragique, �lectre est une des nombreuses preuves de l'intemporalit� de la trag�die. �crite en 1937, il s'agirait en effet d'une trag�die bourgeoise, selon Jean Giraudoux lui-m�me. Apr�s la tragique mort d'Agamemnon, roi d'Argos assassin� � son retour de Troie, �lectre, fille de celui-ci et de la reine Clytemnestre, cherche le coupable tout en ressentant une haine inexplicable pour sa m�re. L'arriv�e d'Oreste, son fr�re exil� depuis le myst�rieux assassinat, et les confessions d'adult�re faites par la femme du pr�sident du s�nat � celui-ci aideront �lectre dans sa qu�te qui la m�nera finalement � �tre l'objet de la mal�diction qui p�se sur sa famille. Le personnage �ponyme dirige son fr�re et s'affirme, c'est r�ellement le personnage principal.
