Nie hat eine Menschheit so bewu�t und verantwortungspflichtig an einer Scheide der Zeitalter gestanden. Die Stunde h�lt ihren Atem an, zu lang f�r das bangende Herz, zu kurz f�r das flatternde Gewissen, der Kl�ppel holt aus. Ist der Schlag verklungen, nach Menschenjahren, Sekunden des �on, so stehen wir in fremder Welt und Zeit, beladen oder ents�hnt, und blicken durch den Tr�nenschleier des Krieges nach dem entsinkenden Reiche der Gewesenheit. Unbewu�ter, zweifelfreier waren die, die vor weniger als hundert Jahren durch den Nebel der Weltkriege das rosenfarbene Jahrhundert verschwimmen sahen. Die Revolution hatte ihnen eine brauntuchene b�rgerliche Sicherheit gegeben, der Krieg hatte mehr geschlichtet als genommen, sie f�hlten besch�ftigt das Nahen von Wissenschaft, Technik und Kapital und konnten sich dem �berlassen, was sie Restauration nannten, und was der h��lichste Nutzbau der �berv�lkerten, mechanisierungsdurstigen Welt war. Der Bau wuchs; in den h�chsten, luftigsten und frechsten Geschossen des Himmelskratzers sind wir geboren und haben wir gelebt; jetzt bricht er nieder, aus Mangel an Gerechtigkeit und organischer Kunst, die man verschm�ht hatte, hineinzubauen. Er hatte kein Fundament, stand auf dem Schuttplatz der franz�sischen Revolution, die Raum geschaffen hatte, aber keinen Baugrund. Bis in seine h�chsten Zinnen, die Nationalismus und Imperialismus hie�en, trug er keine Idee in sich, nur ein empirisches Gleichgewicht der Kr�fte; alles was Idee hie�, rankte sich �u�erlich empor und zerm�rbte seine W�nde.
