Il s'agit, avec L'Enracinement, de l'oeuvre philosophique la plus importante de Weil, qui la d�signait comme son grand oeuvre ou son testament . L'essai comporte une introduction, puis quatre sections centrales, intitul�es respectivement Critique du marxisme, Analyse de l'oppression, Tableau th�orique d'une soci�t� libre et Esquisse de la vie contemporaine, suivies d'une conclusion. De mani�re g�n�rale, Simone Weil se demande dans cet essai � quelles conditions le travail peut constituer un acte libre. Toutefois, le passage de l'oppression � la libert� ne r�side pas, selon elle, dans l'abolition du travail, malgr� ce que pourraient croire les utopistes qui r�vent d'une soci�t� des loisirs, ni dans la lib�ration du travail humain par la machine, contrairement � ce que les adeptes du progr�s technique pourraient s'imaginer. Car il ne s'agit pas, selon Weil, de lib�rer les �tres humains de toute forme de travail; m�me si c'�tait possible, ce n'est nullement souhaitable. Elle affirme en effet que la notion du travail consid�r� comme une valeur humaine est sans doute l'unique conqu�te spirituelle qu'ait faite la pens�e humaine depuis le miracle grec7 . Le travail a une valeur en soi et doit tenir une place primordiale dans la vie humaine; suivant les derniers mots de Weil dans L'Enracinement, soit neuf ans apr�s la r�daction des R�flexions, il est facile de d�finir la place que doit occuper le travail physique dans une vie sociale bien ordonn�e.
