Charles Dickens' "Great Expectations" - now a major new film from director Mike Newell ("Four Weddings and a Funeral", "Harry Potter") - charts the course of orphan Pip Pirrip's life as it is transformed by a vast, mysterious inheritance. Adapted from Dickens' novel by bestselling author David Nicholls ("One Day"), "Great Expectations" stars Ralph Fiennes ("The Reader"), Helena Bonham Carter ("Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows") and Jeremy Irvine ("War Horse") and also features Robbie Coltrane, David Walliams and Sally Hawkins. A terrifying encounter with the escaped convict Abel Magwitch in a graveyard on the wild Kent marshes; a summons to meet the bitter, decrepit Miss Havisham and her beautiful, cold-hearted ward Estella at Satis House; the sudden generosity of a mysterious benefactor - these form a series of events that change the orphaned Pip's life forever, and he eagerly abandons his humble station as an apprentice to blacksmith Joe Gargery, beginning a new life as a gentleman. Charles Dickens' haunting late novel depicts Pip's education and development through adversity as he discovers the true nature of his identity, and his 'great expectations'. Charles Dickens is one of the best-loved novelists in the English language, whose 200th anniversary was celebrated in 2012. His most famous books, including "Oliver Twist", "Great Expectations", "A Tale of Two Cities", "David Copperfield" and "The Pickwick Papers", have been adapted for stage and screen and read by millions. ""Great Expectations" is up there for me with the world's greatest novels." (Howard Jacobson).

THIS BOOK WAS ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE! Although sophisticated, it is extremely boring to read and has way too much detail! THERE IS NOT THAT MUCH TO SAY! I FEEL LIKE I READ 500 pgs. ON SOMETHING THAT COULD EASILY BE WRITTEN IN 200! ITS 500 pgs. ABOUT SOMEONE COMING INTO PROPERTY! BIG DEAL! It almost made me cry it was so boring. I almost didn't finish it and i absolutely love reading and have almost never put down a book and not finished. However horrible, if u want a book to put u to sleep, ITS THE RIGHT BOOK FOR YOU!
Anyway, all in all, what i'm saying is that its horrible, DON'T BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

eye-opening
This book will stick with you long after you finish reading it. It's the kind of book that gives you insights into yourself and those around you. Though it is the story of a young boy's coming of age, it can speak to anyone. Read and enjoy; Dickens is priceless!

Dickens' Best
Of all Charles Dickens' novels, this is my favorite. Plenty of pathos, and it really kept me guessing. Pip is a very fallible hero, which is more interesting than some of the paragons you find in other books.

Great Expectations
Memorable characters but DEPRESSING. This depression is understandable because historically 19th Century living was hard dirty and short for most people where ever they happened to live. I would not recommend this book to anyone without warning them of the tone of the book
