Mowgli's adventures with his friends Baloo the bear, Bagheera the black panther and Kaa the python are the heart of the collection. They teach Mowgli valuable lessons about survival, loyalty and the importance of understanding the natural world. Mowgli must also face challenges, such as confronting the fearsome tiger Shere Khan and navigating the complexities of human society, when he encounters a village near the jungle.

Great Stories, Characters, and Poems
Written in 1894 and 1895 The Jungle Book is a collection of stories featuring some of the most famous characters in literature. Most of these stories are about Mowgli and his relationship with the animals of the Indian jungle. Raised by wolves since an infant, Mowgli grows to be part of the wolf pack and is viewed by the other wolves as such. Mowgli gets along with most of the animals in the jungle; Bagheera the panther and Baloo the bear are the main protectors and mentors to Mowgli; however, Shere Khan is the ever present antagonist in this collection of stories. One theme in the book is the struggle Mowgli has with being both a wolf (of sorts) and a human. The subject of this review is the Educator Classic Library version of The Jungle Book; this version contains explanatory notes in the margins, illustrations, and background knowledge on Rudyard Kipling. The quotes, poems, and ballads at the beginning and/or end of each story make this one of most enjoyable books I have ever read. In sum, The Jungle Book contains great stories, memorable characters, and delightful poetry.
