My opinion you understand
I took several days to think about what I was going to write in this review. I finished the book over a week ago so the story is still fresh but I've hopefully left some feelings behind.
To sum up I didn't like this book. I know it's a debut novel and Orson Scott Card gave it a glowing preview review. I was exited to read this book after hearing Mr. Sanderson was picked to write the final book of the immense Robert Jordan saga.
I know breathing new life into fantasy can be difficult but Elantris goes too far off of my traditional fantasy likes. By traditional I mean Tolkien and the like. Boring of me, I know, but it's what I like. The story never grabbed me and by the end I was just wanting the story to be over. I didn't particularly like any of the characters except Lord Shuden and he was a minor character.
I'm having a real difficult time writing something that just isn't my negative feelings. To finish I really wanted to like this book but didn't. As I said, it's not my brand of fantasy. But for those looking for a different form of magic, non-traditional fantasy (which I know many are seeking), and a self contained story I would recommend this book.
