El origen del mundo es una de las obras malditas del siglo XIX. Concebida por Gustave Coubert en 1866 llev� una existencia casi clandestina durante m�s de un siglo, oculta por toda clase de artificos, que solo permitieron su contemplaci�n furtiva a un reducido grupo de escogidos. El azar la hizo correr de mano en mano en una larga cadena de propietarios que la llevaron de Francia a Budapest, fue presa del expolio nazi y rescatada por el Ej�rcito Rojo, que la devolvi� a su leg�timo due�o. Su �ltimo propietario conocido fue el psicoanalista Jacques Lacan. Tras su muerte en 1981 el lienzo qued� en manos del estado franc�s, que no se atrevi� a exponerlo p�blicamente hasta 1995, bajo condiciones especiales de protecci�n, en una sala del Museo D'Orsay, donde se encuentra en la actualidad. Enigm�tico e inquietante, este desnudo femenino de realismo desbordante, arrastra hasta nuestros d�as la leyenda de ser, por m�ritos propios, el cuadro m�s escandaloso de la historia del arte.
